Whew! December was another busy month for ReadBoston!
On December 3rd, ReadBoston and Boston Celtics forward, Aron Baynes paid a visit to the Harvard Kent School in Charlestown. Harvard Kent students and Baynes performed a play based on “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein for their peers and teachers. The Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation presented the school with a check for $2,500 to be used to support literacy instruction.
On December 6th, the Michael J Perkins School in South Boston hosted their Cookies & Books event. Guest readers, including ReadBoston and local police officers and firefighters, visited each classroom. ReadBoston donated books for students to take home after the event.
On December 18th, we visited the Gardner Pilot Academy in Allston. The “Give the Gift of Reading” event gathers members from the community to celebrate reading and the importance of education. After a welcome breakfast, guests visited classrooms to read a book aloud and talk with students about the value of reading. ReadBoston provided books for each student to take home.
Every Wednesday, ReadBoston meets with the children of the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard afterschool program in Mission Hill for their book club. The group begins with a discussion about the book chosen to be read. After the story is read, book club members participate in a craft project that supports the story. At the end of every session everyone gets to choose a book to take home. Many of the children ask for the synopsis to be read to them as a way to help them decide what book they want.
Every 3rd Sunday of the month from 11am to 1pm fathers and kids are invited to join the Daddy & Me Literacy Program hosted by the Hawthorne Youth Community Center located at 9 Fulda Street, Roxbury. Families participate in an interactive ReadBoston read aloud and then the dads engage with their children to practice new read aloud skills. Families are given a new book to take home and add to their home libraries. Space is available for new families. See the below flyer from the December session. We would love to see you there!
